Feedly for iOS and Android 24 debuts access to shared collections, new optimised look for iPhone 6

27 October 2014, Nick Peers

FeedlyNews aggregator service Feedly has unveiled Feedly 24.0, a major new release of its iOS and Android-friendly tool. The iOS build follows days after the Android version was unveiled.

Version 24.0 introduces two new features of note: access to shared collections and tagging support. The iOS version also debuts a new design optimised for the latest iPhones while the Android build introduces support for the forthcoming Android L.

Feedly 24.0 opens by allowing mobile users to easily access shared collections, which were unveiled as a new feature in Feedly’s web-based interface earlier this month. Shared collections are collections of feeds curated by others and made publicly available.

Feedly 24 gives mobile users access to the recently launched shared collections feature.

These will now appear under the ‘Featured collections’ headline when browsing or searching for new feeds – tapping one reveals the contents of the collection plus an option to ‘Add All’ or select individual feeds to incorporate into the user’s own collection.

Version 24 of the app also adds support for tags, which makes it easier to group articles together. Tags can be added to the selected article by tapping the ‘…’ button and choosing Tag, then creating the tag in question or selecting from an existing list.

Once created, users can browse by tag via the main menu – they’re found underneath the feed categories list.

The iOS build comes with a new design specially optimised for the larger iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ screens, while the Android version includes support for the forthcoming Android 5.0.

One bug has been documented, which affects the user’s ability to keep articles unread after opening them. Feedly advises iOS users to close the article and then use the short right swipe gesture to mark the article unread as a workaround. The bug will be fixed in version 24.1, which has already been rolled out to the Android platform.

Feedly 24.0 for iPad, iPhone and Android, is available now as a freeware download. iOS 6.0 or later, or Android 2.3 or later is required.
