Google Play Music gets smarter music recommendations

14 November 2016, Mike Williams

Google Play MusicGoogle Play Music (Android, iOS) is being revamped to deliver more intelligent context-sensitive playlists and recommendations.

The system now takes account of your location, what you’re likely to be doing and why you might be listening when making its choices.

How might this work? The official announcement has some examples: “Your workout music is front and center as you walk into the gym, a sunset soundtrack appears just as the sky goes pink, and tunes for focusing turn up at the library.”

You’ll see the results of this smarter approach in the new home screen, where “the music that you care about now is always [available]… Maybe that’s your favorite new release on Friday, the dance party playlist you listen to after work, or more music from a new artist you’ve just fallen in love with. Regardless, it will be there waiting for you to press play.”

Subscribers will see another benefit. Google Play Music now automatically maintains a smart offline playlist based on whatever you’re listened to recently, ensuring you’ll always have your favourite tunes, even when there’s no connection.

As with previous editions, the free Google Play Music gets you ad-supported internet radio, the new intelligent recommendations, storage and streaming for up to 50,000 songs from your own collection.

Subscribing from $9.99/ month ($14.99 for up to 6 users) gets you on-demand access to over 50 million songs, offline listening, YouTube Red membership (where available) and no ads at all.

The new Google Play Music is currently being rolled out on Android, iOS and the web over 62 countries.
