If you want to capture what's on your screen and save it as an image file, you have various options available to you. You could hit the Print Screen key to copy screen contents to the clipboard, and then paste it into an image editor ready for cropping, editing and saving – but this is an unnecessarily lengthy process for those occasions when you need to make multiple captures.

You could instead turn to Windows' built in Snipping Tool – or Snip & Sketch as it has now become. This is a far more versatile tool, but it can be unwieldy to use, and you need to remember the correct keyboard shortcuts to get the most from it. There are also countless alternatives which can be cumbersome and need to be kept running in the background ready for when you need them.

QuickSnip, however, is rather different. It is a portable app that comprises a single executable file. When you launch the app, you can immediately draw a box on your screen to indicate the area you would like to capture. The capture is instantly saved in PNG format in the Snips subdirectory of your Pictures folder.

There are no options to configure – none at all – and no keyboard shortcuts to remember. It is quick and light, and does not use any system resources when you are not actively using it. Perhaps the best way to make use of the software is to copy the app to a folder of your choice, and then pin a shortcut to the taskbar or desktop. If you put the shortcut in the taskbar, screengrabbing is never more than a single click away – perfect for when you want to be able to capture image with a minimum of fuss.

Verdict:

QuickSnip's simplicity is both a blessing and a curse. It is outrageously fast to capture screenshots, but the complete absence of options – or even an interface – may be off-putting to some people. But this is an app that is about speed and convenience. We challenge you to find a faster screengrabber!
